Dedication Ceremony

On Saturday, June 5, 2010, the house stood gallantly as volunteers from Eagle Habitat Build and friends and family of Tijuanda and Constance Farrington arrived to welcome the family to their new home. Welcomed by Rebie Coleman, chair of the NCCU Staff Senate, event attendees stood under a tent eager for inspiration. Miguel Rubiera, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Durham, and Dr. Janice Harper, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at NCCU, spoke about the NCCU and Habitat partnership.

Working closely on the construction of 615 Hickory Street, construction supervisors, Jesus Gutierrez and Christian Pikaart, presented Tijuanda and Constance with a Bible. As a surprise, Pikaart pulled out the keys to Farrington’s new home. Tijuanda and Constance were both overjoyed sharing their appreciation for God and their newfound community. Constance added her interior decorating plans for purple walls and a black butterfly to go on one of the walls in her room.

With the cutting of the ribbon and blessing of the home, Tijuanda and Constance turned the key as they stepped inside their new home.

This past Saturday, volunteers worked vigorously to complete the last item on the task list: landscaping. These volunteers from the surrounding community included future Habitat homeowners and current Duke students. To complete the landscaping, volunteers planted four 50 lb trees on the right side of the house and five shrubs on each side of the house. As the final step, grass seeds, lime pellets, and pine straw were sprinkled all around the front and back yard. During the week, the flooring and carpet are to be installed to complete the final touches prior to inspection.

On February 20, 2010, North Carolina Central University was ready to work its first full day of Eagle Habitat shifts as previous shifts were canceled due to weather conditions. Three student organizations the Black Law Student Association, Junior Class Council, and Soaring Service Leaders were joined by student peers and NCCU staff members. At the end of the day, the house frame was successfully covered with plywood and wrapped with the first layer of insulation. In addition, the roof trusses were covered with plywood covering and insulation.
